No one knows why certain filmmakers are more popular than others. And it doesn’t matter, since popularity isn’t important. Quality, however, is something else. One director who deserves more recognition than he already has is Zrinko Ogresta.

Ogresta is a Croatian filmmaker who, unfortunately, is no longer with us. The good thing is that he made various films that left a lasting impact on domestic and international cinema.

Therefore, let’s address some of his films.

Red Dust

Cast: Ivo Gregurević, Josip Kučan, Marko Matanović, Slaven Knezović, Kristijan Ugrina

Red Dust is set at the beginning of the 90s in a particular Zagreb neighborhood. It offers a tragic and dark story about the community and its difficult transition after the fall of Yugoslavia during the rise of organized crime.

This movie by Zrinko Ogresta had both domestic and international success. The entire crew, including the excellent Croatian actors, drew the audience and critics’ attention. At home, it won five awards at the Pula Film Festival. Abroad, it was nominated at the Venice Film Festival, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and won the Golden Anchor Award at the Haifa International Film Festival.

On the Other Side

Cast: Ksenija Marinković, Lazar Ristovski, Tihana Lazović, Robert Budak

This one is a drama about an unexpected call that brings Vesna, the leading character, back to a secret from 20 years ago. Even though she moved her family to Zagreb, the secret she’s been trying to hide reappears.

On the Other Side is, arguably, Zrinko Ogresta’s most successful film, especially when it comes to awards. It’s not surprising when one of the leading roles is played by such a great Croatian actress, Ksenija Marinkovic. It was part of the Berlinale, Cleveland International Film Festival, Pula Film Festival, FEST, Tromsø International Film Festival, etc.

A Blue Flower

Cast: Vanja Ćirić, Anja Šovagović-Despot, Niksa Butijer, Tea Harčević

Mirjana receives an award on the eve of her 20th work anniversary. However, Ogresta uses this moment of his leading character to illustrate something unique. He shows us her interactions with her loved ones to showcase various parts of her life. We see the one she’s living, the one before, and the one that is yet to happen.

Zrinko had success again, gathering nominations and awards at various film festivals. A Blue Flower was part of the Moscow International Film Festival, Pula Film Festival, Mostar Film Festival, Screenfest, etc.

Washed Out

Cast: Katarina Bistrović-Darvaš, Josip Kučan, Filip Šovagović, Mustafa Nadarević, Božidarka Frajt, Ivo Gregurević

Most of Ogresta’s movies are in the drama genre, and so is this one. However, Washed Out is also a romance story. Katarina Bistrović-Darvaš excellently plays Jagoda, who begins a relationship with a younger soldier, Zlatko. She lives in a poor place while her brother is an alcoholic, her father is depressed, and her mother is close to death. Even though her new relationship seems to be a salvation, things become complex.

This romance-drama was an absolute winner at the 1995 Pula Film Festival, winning six awards out of six nominations. Moreover, it was also part of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Days of Croatian Film, and Prix Italia.

Projections

Cast: Jasna Bilušić, Ksenija Marinković, Bojan Navojec, Polona Juh, Vladimir Jurc, Jelena Miholjević, etc.

It’s interesting to watch a film where long-repressed personal tensions come to the surface. Here, several trainee therapists come to their group psychotherapy session. However, as their routine is changed, their professional masks begin to fall, and their true selves come to the surface.

Unlike his other movies, Projections wasn’t a big hit at festivals. Even so, it was still nominated for Best Film at the Pula Film Festival. Nevertheless, it’s still a good and interesting film.

Fragments: Chronicle of a Vanishing

Cast: Filip Šovagović, Alma Prica, Slavko Juraga, etc.

If you want to watch a drama movie with elements of thriller and mystery, Fragments: Chronicle of a Vanishing is an excellent choice. It tells the story of a man who wants to discover why his grandfather was labeled an enemy of the state and disappeared in WW2. Furthermore, why the then new communist government labeled his family as traitors and whether his grandfather was innocent.

The film drew enough attention and won awards at the Pula Film Festival and the Days of Croatian Film. However, it would have been even a bigger success if it would have been nominated at the 1991 European Film Awards. It came close to making the final five selections, but only three films were officially nominated.

Here

Cast: Jasmin Telalović, Marija Tadić, Zlatko Crnković, Ivo Gregurević, Ivan Herceg, etc.

Zrinko Ogresta has often addressed the lives of the marginalized, and the same happens here. Here is a mix of stories about different unfortunate characters whose lives sometimes intertwine. The story takes place during and after the Yugoslav Wars.

Winning the Krzysztof Kieslowski Award at the Denver Film Festival was important. Furthermore, it was also part of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival, Pula Film Festival, Milan Film Festival, etc.

Behind the Glass

Cast: Leon Lučev, Jadranka Đokić, Anja Šovagović-Despot, Daria Lorenci

Last but not least, Behind the Glass follows interrelated characters who live in a chaotic order with false serenity. The plot happens during five days, which gives this movie even more tension and makes it more interesting.

Ogresta was once again nominated at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Pula Film Festival. However, he also won the Audience Award at the Motovun Film Festival.

Final Words on Zrinko Ogresta and His Films

Zrinko Ogresta leaves behind a remarkable body of work that deserves to be appreciated well beyond the borders of Croatian cinema. His films have psychological depth, carefully constructed compositions, outstanding performances and an enduring interest in the relationship between individuals and the societies they inhabit.

Throughout his career, he received recognition at some of Europe’s most respected film festivals, including Berlin, Venice and Karlovy Vary. Ogresta was never particularly interested in easy answers or conventional storytelling. Instead, he explored the contradictions of human nature, the weight of the past and the quiet tragedies of everyday existence.
