This article is undoubtedly the most challenging one that I have written so far.
Choosing the best Balkan actors and actresses is difficult in itself, let alone picking the top 24. Nevertheless, here we are.
This list will include 24 Balkan actors and actresses for two reasons. One, because it includes both males and females. And two, because each Balkan country will have two representatives, one male and one female. According to most definitions, Balkan countries are North Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, Croatia, BiH, Slovenia, Montenegro, Romania, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, and a piece of Turkey.
Let’s begin.
Most Prominent Balkan Actors
There’s no doubt that Balkan cinema, even though it doesn’t have massive budgets, has made a name for itself worldwide. I can easily write 100 performers that are more than impressive, but that wouldn’t be as challenging.
Before I begin the list, there’s one important thing I need to mention. There’s no such thing as the best actor ever, nor will there ever be. Acting isn’t a sporting competition. Therefore, this list is made according to my taste and overall consideration by both film critics and fans.
Nebojša Glogovac
Undoubtedly one of the greatest worldwide, unfortunately, Glogovac is no longer with us. However, he left more than impressive work in film, theater, and TV. The Serbian actor had an authentic magnetic presence that attracted audiences immediately, no matter the role he played.

Meto Jovanovski
As I mentioned above, there isn’t something like ‘’best’’ in acting. Still, it’s hard not to put Meto Jovanovski at the top since this Macedonian actor was delivering high-level work for decades. A leading role or an episode, you remember Meto’s character in every film.

Top 5 Movies: Tattoo, Before the Rain, Happy New Year, Macedonian Saga, Angels of the Dumps
Rade Šerbedžija
When it comes to Balkan actors in Hollywood, the first name that always pops up is Rade Šerbedžija. However, it isn’t Hollywood that made him great; quite the contrary, he could easily succeed worldwide because he was a fantastic actor from the beginning. Rade is still considered arguably the best Croatian actor.

Emir Hadžihafizbegović
You will rarely see an actor as transformative as Emir Hadžihafizbegović. He can literally play any role, which he has proven many times in his acting career. You would often hear about the range of Bruno Ganz, from Wings of Desire to Downfall. Well, this Bosnian actor can deliver the same range.

Final Words on Balkan Actors and Actresses
Selecting the most prominent Balkan actors and actresses is nearly impossible because this region has produced an extraordinary range of talent. What’s even more impressive is that these artists often worked with limited resources, but delivered world-class performances.
What makes Balkan cinema special isn’t just talent – it’s authenticity. These actors and actresses bring raw emotion, cultural depth, and realism that often surpass even the biggest productions.
And if anything is certain, it’s this: for every name on this list, there are many more who could just as easily belong here.
