Before we begin, it’s important to note this isn’t a place where you’ll discover feminist films according to today’s trend. Meaning, this ain’t a woke article, quite the contrary, a real feminist appreciation.

That being said, let’s begin without further ado to see what feminist movies are and the best feminist movies so far, according to my tastes.

What Is A Feminist Movie?

There’s no one definition of what a feminist movie is, especially not today. Various people define it differently, some of whom only in the way that suits them best.

However, one thing all definitions have in common is that they must trigger conversations, even actions, about women’s social and/or general female experiences. Additionally, it can also address politics regarding women and explore their sexuality, femininity, etc.

The Idiotic Question of Who Is Allowed to Make Feminist Movies

Today’s worldwide cinema, unfortunately, often has various illogical rules. As some say that only trans actors can act trans roles, the same, probably, say that only women can direct feminist movies. This is, to express myself modestly, nonsense.

The essence of acting is to pretend to be someone else. Therefore, a great actor or actress would be someone who acts something entirely different from their natural habitat. For instance, I would love to see a trans actor playing Bronson and Tom Hardy playing a trans character. Actually, we already have an excellent example of Cillian Murphy in Breakfast on Pluto.

Transgender films don’t have to be, per se, with trans performers since the essence of acting is transformation. Likewise, an excellent feminist film can also be made by a man or a woman who doesn’t agree with today’s modern feminism. Woke activists may not have noticed, but there are also male feminists. They are, unfortunately, a rare kind, but that doesn’t mean they should also be forbidden to film.

By the way, Martin Scorsese isn’t a gangster, Srdjan Dragojevic isn’t gay, and Francis Ford Coppola definitely wasn’t in the Vietnam War. Yet, they made masterpieces regarding these subjects.

Best Feminist Movies

Let’s divide these top feminist movies into different segments, including classics, international, modern, and also those about identity and sexuality, and about power and resistance.

Of course, this isn’t a definitive segmentation, but one that suits to list them a bit easily. Let’s begin with the classics.

Final Words on Feminist Movies

Now you know what feminist movies are, or my view of what they should be, which is, at the minimum, a realistic view. Also, above you have a list of movies you can watch, subdivided into various categories to make your selection easier.

Remember, just because something is trendy and supposedly modern, it doesn’t mean that it’s good. Often, it’s the contrary, and the same rule applies to feminist movies. Of course, you also don’t have to agree with my list. However, one thing is for sure – cinema-wise, it’s undoubtedly better than any woke list about feminist art of any kind.

I hope you’ll enjoy the films above, and if you want to discover more movies, feel free to read my other articles.
