First and foremost, there’s no such thing as an AI movie industry. Nor will there ever be one. Probably.
However, it’s undeniable that AI already has some effect on worldwide cinema. Mostly negatively, because the essence of film is acting, and acting requires a soul, feelings, and expressions. Nevertheless, there may be some positive aspects regarding AI film production, even though it’s still early to be sure.
Be as it may, let’s see if there already is an AI movie industry and how much artificial intelligence affects the existing one.
Does AI Really Affect the Movie Industry?
The short answer is yes. The reason for this is that there are already several AI film festivals, which implies making AI movies. Of course, this alone doesn’t create an AI movie industry, but it’s an evident transformation. Furthermore, there are several AI films, both short and feature, made entirely with artificial intelligence. Therefore, this also includes screenwriting, acting, etc.
However, the long and more realistic answer is no. The reason this is happening now is that it’s something new, so there’s a particular level of enthusiasm. However, my take is it won’t stand the test of time.
Why AI Won’t Affect the Movie Industry in the Long Run?
Several reasons are proof that artificial intelligence won’t affect the movie industry long-term, including the following:
- Most importantly, AI can’t create humor, no matter how creative it gets. Yes, we don’t know what will be invented in the future, but it’s still a robot, especially regarding local humor.
- It may be phenomenal for animated films, but it can’t replace realistic acting performances. AI will never be better or more engaging than Denzel Washington or Meryl Streep.
- The same aspect of humor applies to screenwriting. Writing is indeed its most powerful tool so far, but it’s extremely stiff. It’s also often literal and not creative enough.
- Movies vastly depend on the film directors. Even a masterful AI tool won’t replace any great director, from Dusan Makavejev to Martin Scorsese.
How to Make AI Films?
Don’t.
Why would you make one if you already have the talent to make a real film? Every new AI movie may be interesting at the moment because people want to see the difference. However, this doesn’t mean it will become a complete replacement.
AI directors still don’t exist, meaning we’re far from having an entire artificial intelligence tool that will make a film by itself. The same goes for AI screenwriters, so everything is still a tool used by a human.
As for using tools to boost your creativity, why not? One great thing about AI is that it’s excellent for brainstorming and improving ideas. Still, shifting your passion to make AI films with AI actors and AI actresses with a screenplay written entirely by AI, for me, is pointless.
What Do You Miss By Making An AI Film?
You miss everything. Ok, I’ll be realistic. AI filmmaking provides a moment that’s a blessing and a curse – you don’t need to work with people.
And yes, you could view this as a positive aspect in the sense that you won’t have to deal with ego-trip actors, arrogant actresses, non-flexible screenwriters, major studio ignorant bosses, etc.
On the other hand, you’ll miss the crucial aspect, creativity, which is the essence of moviemaking. Additionally, filmmaking is one of the rare art forms where co-working with other people boosts creativity and manifests experiences for life. Collaboration with phenomenal performers who are also great people, mindblowing screenwriters, editors, etc. Making a film isn’t just about the final ‘product.’ In fact, it’s almost not at all about that, and even though it sounds cliché, it’s about the entire journey, including the final result.
Final Words on Whether AI Affects the Movie Industry
There’s no one definitive answer. Like everything else today, AI also has some effect on the movie industry as well. However, there still isn’t, and there won’t be an actual AI movie industry soon.
Be as it may, one thing is absolutely sure – artificial intelligence will never replace the art of filmmaking or any other art form.
Essentially, art has a soul. AI doesn’t. Period.
