Since I already made a list of the best actors from Croatia, it’s time to do the same with Croatian actresses. It’s a challenging task since many deserve to be mentioned. However, I managed to shorten the list to nine actresses, according to my tastes.
Without further ado, let’s begin and see why these artists deserve even more attention for their talent and craft.
Mira Furlan
Mira Furlan is one of the most recognizable faces in Yugoslav and Croatian cinema, but she also made a remarkable impact on international film. Additionally, she was one of the rare Croatian actresses in Hollywood.
Her intelligence and fearless emotional range made her the number one choice to most directors, both domestically and internationally. Furlan brought depth, seriousness, and professionalism to every project by blending quiet power with vulnerability. Her untimely death in 2021 left a deep void in the Balkan artistic community.
My favorite Mira Furlan role: Sonja in The Tour (Turneja) by Goran Markovic.
Ksenija Marinković
It’s fair to say that Ksenija Marinković has long been a staple of Croatian theater, film, and television. Known for her ability to transform into different roles, she transitions from tragic figures to comic personas.
Marinković’s strength lies in her naturalism and subtlety since she never overacts, instead allowing emotion to emerge organically. Whether on stage at the Croatian National Theatre or on screen, her presence is magnetic.
My favorite Ksenija Marinkovic role: Nada in Heavens Above (Nebesa) by Srdjan Dragojevic.
Tihana Lazović
Undoubtedly, one of the famous Croatian actresses who is popular because of their quality and craft. Tihana Lazovic brings a rare sensitivity to her roles, revealing internal conflict through minimal yet powerful gestures.
Tihana has managed to build a domestic and international career that’s marked by artistic integrity, not celebrity. Her choices suggest an actress committed to telling socially resonant and emotionally rich stories.
My favorite Tihana Lazovic role: Jelena/Natasa/Marija in The High Sun (Zvizdan) by Dalibor Matanic.
Natasa Janjić
With her expressive face and magnetic screen presence, Nataša Janjić has become one of Croatia’s most beloved contemporary actresses.
What sets Janjić apart is her emotional transparency and her ability to connect instantly with the audience. Whether she’s portraying vulnerability or strength, her performances feel deeply personal. She’s also a prominent figure in theater and television, demonstrating consistent excellence.
My favorite Natasa Janjic role: Maja in In Therapy (Na terapiji) by Marko Djilas.
Judita Franković
Judita Franković doesn’t fear entering the worlds of dramas, comedies, romances, and everything in between. Additionally, she is a sex symbol who knows how to use her magnetic sex appeal on screen, but always to add quality to a role.
Interestingly, Judita has also studied mime, voice, speech, dance, puppetry, and acrobatics. Aside from movies, she is known for her stage work and literary background, which enriches her interpretations.
Frankovic is undoubtedly among the most interesting Croatian actresses working today.
My favorite Judita Frankovic role: Sonja Sterle in Sonja and the Bull (Sonja i bik) by Vlatka Vorkapić.
Lana Barić
There’s rarely a powerhouse performer and fierce creative actress like Lana Barić. Aside from her excellent acting, Lana has also written great screenplays and directed movies.
Barić has been outspoken on social and feminist issues. Her performances are marked by emotional authenticity and sharp intelligence. She doesn’t shy away from difficult subject matters, often portraying women grappling with trauma, identity, and societal pressure.
Her talents as an actress and writer position her as a driving force in shaping the future of Balkan cinema.
My favorite Lana Baric role: Tereza in Tereza37 by Danilo Serbedzija.
Ena Begović
As a perfect combination of fantastic talent and beauty, Ena Begović remains an icon. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us, but she’s remembered for her talent, charisma, and beauty.
Rising to fame in the 80s, Begovic often portrayed seductive, enigmatic women. However, she was a lot more than just a screen siren. Ena had a commanding presence and deep emotional range that captivated audiences. By combining classical elegance and bold modernity, she became a unique actress.
My favorite Ena Begovic role: This is a tough choice, but let’s say Veronika in The Fall of Italy (Pad Italije) by Lordan Zafranovic.
Zrinka Cvitesić
Zrinka Cvitešić is a rare talent who has successfully transitioned from Croatian cinema and theater to international acclaim. She won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in the West End musical Once, becoming a global ambassador for Croatian acting.
Cvitešić is known for her poise and precision, often delivering quiet but devastatingly powerful performances. Her international success hasn’t distanced her from Croatian cinema; on the contrary, she remains deeply involved.
My favorite Zrinka Cvitesic role: Sophie in Libertango by Sara Hribar.
Tara Thaller
As a rising star, Tara Thaller is one of the Croatian actresses who quickly gained recognition for her expressiveness and screen presence. Thaller stands out for her ability to embody youthful energy while maintaining emotional depth.
As her career expands, she’s proving herself capable of tackling increasingly complex roles. She represents the new generation of talent that is redefining Croatian cinema.
My favorite Tara Thaller role: Blanka in Success (Uspjeh) by Marjan Alcevski.
Final Words on Croatian Actresses
From legends like Mira Furlan to rising stars like Tara Thaller, Croatian actresses bring an extraordinary depth of emotion, intelligence, and passion. Three other actresses who didn’t make the list, but I would like to mention are Sandra Loncarić, Mia Begović, and Nina Violić.
These actresses are performers, but also cultural voices who enrich cinema with their presence. Their stories and characters reflect the history and the evolving identity of the region.
