Movies with cult followings are rare, as they should be. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be cult classics.

There are many examples, especially if you read various articles online. Still, most lists aren’t realistic. I’m not saying that I’m right, and this is only a short list according to my tastes. However, many articles about top cult classic movies are crossing the line between a cult classic and a hit.

Be as it may, let’s see some of the greatest cult films of all time.

Fight Club

When it comes to 90s cult films, one must mention Fight Club. David Fincher may not be a screenwriter, but he’s undoubtedly a fantastic director. When you pick actors like Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter, the chances are the film is going to be, at least, good. Of course, this film is excellent.

It’s almost impossible to describe it without, not making a classic spoiler, but ruining your experience. Let’s say that you haven’t seen anything similar.

Pulp Fiction

One of his best, and undoubtedly Tarantino’s most authentic movie, Pulp Fiction, has a story that’s driven by two hitmen who love philosophical debates. It has such a cult status that even the main actors, John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, are forever tied to their characters. Of course, the cast includes other excellent actors like Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, etc.

Pulp Fiction is hip, raw, complex, simple, and everything in between. Not to mention its dialogue, which is so authentic that, even today, people often quote lines from this film.

A Clockwork Orange

Undoubtedly one of the top cult classic movies, Stanley Kubrick made this movie with a small budget. However, it can’t be seen or felt while you watch it, quite the contrary; it looks phenomenal. But hey, that’s Kubrick.

Malcolm McDowell is excellent as the leading actor in A Clockwork Orange. There are also other established actors like Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, etc. It used to be a dystopian film, but seeing the current state of the world, it doesn’t seem far-fetched.

Pusher

Even after all these years, it’s still impressive how this is the first movie made by Nicolas Winding Refn. Moreover, it’s also unbelievable that it was the first movie of Mads Mikkelsen and Zlatko Buric. The only actor with experience was Kim Bodnia. That’s what probably makes Pusher even more amazing.

Kim’s and Mads’s characters are pushers, while Zlatko plays the charismatic drug lord, Milo. Along with Refn’s leadership and real underworld guys being cast members, it’s one of the top cult classic movies, without a doubt.

Tattoo

Marginalized people have rarely been represented in cinema like they are in Tattoo. Yes, it’s one leading character in the movie, played by legendary actor Meto Jovanovski. Still, he’s a symbol for all people living on the margins. When the leading character is taken to prison, even though entirely innocent, a story of social and political bizarreness begins to unfold.

It’s passed on from generation to generation, and even young people quote lines from this movie. Tattoo is simultaneously tragic and extremely funny. Additionally, the rest of the cast is brilliant, including Aleksandar Caminski, Liljana Medjesi, Stole Arandjelovic, Svetozar Cvetkovic, Zoran Cvijanovic, Jordanco Cevrevski, etc.

Undoubtedly, one of the most powerful Macedonian movies ever.

The Wounds

The humor blended with under-the-surface satire and tragedy made by Srdjan Dragojevic is highly authentic and his recognizable forte. In The Wounds, he creates a story of two youngsters, Pinki and Svaba, who are rising criminals while the society around them is collapsing.

If there is a film that describes Serbia’s 90s urban or quasi-urban society, it’s The Wounds. Even though sabotaged by political figures and the state, it became a cult film. Unfortunately, some of the subtle questions in this movie still remain unanswered today.

Snatch

In my opinion, Brad Pitt’s best role so far is in Snatch. With Guy Ritchie’s recognizable directing style and the excellent cast ensemble, this film became a cult classic. Even if you’ve already seen it, you probably find yourself watching it again when you run into it on TV by accident.

The mix of boxing, violence, gangsters, amateurs, jewelers, and comedy makes Snatch an authentic piece of work. Aside from Ritchie’s directing, this blend was possible due to an extravagant cast. When you team up Brad Pitt, Rade Serbedzija, Stephen Graham, Jason Statham, Vinnie Jones, Ade, and various other actors, it’s logical you’ll make something unique.

When I Grow Up, I Want to Be a Kangaroo

Last but not least, on my top cult classic movies list, is When I Grow Up, I Want to Be a Kangaroo. Most people from the Balkans have seen this movie, especially in Serbia. A lot of them, more than once. Along with Munje!, it’s one of the best comedies at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century.

In the midst of societal unpredictability, during one night, various people who know each other experience life changes. During their journey, they face disappointment, love, greed, joy, happiness, sadness, and even a UFO moment.

Also, you’ll watch many fantastic Serbian actors, including Nebojsa Glogovac, Sergej Trifunovic, Marija Karan, Boris Milivojevic, Gordan Kicic, Nikola Vujovic, etc.
