It’s fascinating how successful Macedonian movies are, considering they’re coming from a small country. On the other hand, when you watch the actresses in these movies, it’s not surprising at all.
Nevertheless, most of them remain underseen. Therefore, let’s make a list of Macedonian actresses who deserve a lot more attention. Before we begin, it’s valuable to mention that this list is made according to my tastes.
Sara Klimoska
It’s impossible to pick one adjective to describe Sara’s acting, but let’s use the word brilliant. Her simultaneous intensity and vulnerability have made her one of the most compelling young actresses in Macedonian cinema.
Even though young, Sara Klimoska is already getting attention outside her native country. Some of her best roles so far are in Willow, Kaymak, You Won’t Be Alone, etc. She combines naturalistic performances with deep emotional insight, making audiences believe her every time they watch her on screen.
Natasha Petrovic
Another impressive talent, Natasha Petrovic, achieved international recognition with As If I Am Not There, earning praise for her portrayal of a war victim. Her fearless acting makes her a bridge between Balkan cinema and global audiences, though she still deserves more widespread acclaim.
Petrovic was a European Shooting Star at the Berlinale in 2011, but what makes her even more authentic is her dedication to independent theater. If you’re coming to Macedonia and don’t mind the language barrier, make sure you watch an Artopia theater play.
Natalija Teodosieva
Natalija Teodosieva brings a quiet magnetism to the screen, using subtle expression to craft deeply human characters. Her role in Willow by Milcho Manchevski as a woman navigating complex moral and cultural boundaries showcased her impressive emotional range and strength.
Teodosieva is also known for her theater roles. However, her talent includes dancing, which is her first love.
Julijana Mircevska
Undoubtedly the most underrated on this list, Julijana Mircevska is an actress with a sharp, intelligent energy. Unfortunately, she hasn’t appeared in many movies or TV shows since her primary focus is theater.
Nevertheless, she deserves broader attention because of her electrifying performances filled with a massive dedication to every role. In 2021, she won the Best Female Role award for playing Medea at the annual festival at The Roman Theater at Stobi.
Verica Nedeska
With a rich career in theater and film, Verica Nedeska brings authenticity to any production. One thing is for sure: Nedeska has range. She’s best known for her roles in Honey Night, The Border Post, Snow White Dies at the End, etc.
Her commanding voice and emotional roles have made her one of the most respected figures on the Macedonian performing arts scene. Still, her screen presence remains underappreciated, which is a major mistake considering her craft.
Katina Ivanova
This gifted character actress left us in 2023, but her comedic and dramatic roles continue to shine. One of the things that made Katina Ivanova unique was her expressive range and intuitive timing.
Ivanova was a favorite in ensemble casts, but she’s long overdue for leading roles that match her talent. With a rich career in theater, film, and television, she remains a Macedonian acting legend.
Milica Stojanova
Just like Katina Ivanova, Milica Stojanova is also an actress from the older generation who laid the groundwork for future talents. A captivating actress with more than a striking vulnerability, Stojanova is one of the most authentic actresses of all time.
She excels at portraying internal conflicts, and her performances often linger in the viewer’s memory long after the play or film ends.
Ana Stojanovska
When it comes to famous Macedonian actresses, Ana Stojanovska is the frontrunner. However, she’s not famous for no reason; quite the contrary, the reason is her acting performances.
She brings complexity to every character, balancing strength with sensitivity, while her work in television and independent film reflects a deep commitment to the craft. Of course, Stojanovska is also excellent in theater.
Stojanovska deserves even more credit for making a name for herself, aside from her background. Having acting legends like Nenad and Silvija Stojanovska as your parents and Aco Jovanovski as your grandfather can be a professional burden. However, Ana succeeded in convincing audiences that they should watch her performances only because of her acting.
Biljana Belicanec
Unfortunately, Biljana Belicanec is not with us anymore, but her fearless performances and authentic voice will always be respected.
An accomplished theater actress, Belicanec channeled intensity with precision, making her roles feel urgent, lived-in, and captivating. She didn’t get her chance to prove herself on screen, although she has several successful TV and film roles. Belicanec could’ve been a powerful presence in more movies, but it’s good that many people had the privilege of watching her in theater plays.
Nikolina Kujaca
Last but not least, Nikolina Kujaca is an understated artist, known for her naturalistic acting style and quiet command of the screen. Her performances are often introspective, revealing emotional layers without ever turning to unnecessary melodrama.
It’s still unimaginable why Kujaca isn’t more often cast in movies and TV shows. However, she’s been highly successful in theater, and the roles she’s played in films so far have always been fantastic. For instance, watch her in Manchevski’s Dust, she’ll impress you in one frame.
Honorable Mentions Who Didn’t Make the List
Even though they didn’t make the list above, here are several other Macedonian actresses whose craft also deserves attention:
- Kamka Tocinovski: Intense and magnetic presence, great in both stage and screen performances.
- Tamara Ristoska: Emotional and quietly powerful, a true force in contemporary drama.
- Miliana Lenak: Delicate, fearless, and a true artist who sadly is no longer with us.
- Dragana Kostadinovska: Charismatic and versatile, known for her sharp timing and expressive range.
- Sabina Ajrula: A late, great legend of Macedonian cinema, blending seriousness with raw emotional depth.
- Irena Ristic: Boldly experimental and deeply committed, a standout in avant-garde and socially engaged work.
- Zvezda Angelovska: Highly expressive, bringing realism and energy to each role.
- Jovana Spasic: A rising talent with fresh energy and remarkable emotional authenticity. In addition, she has a beautiful singing voice and a knack for reciting poetry.
- Katerina Jovanovikj: Also a rising talent with presence, combining elegance and charisma with emotional vulnerability.
- Simona Spirovska: A talented actress and brave activist, Simona is unafraid of challenges, bringing wit and authenticity.
Final Words on Macedonian Actresses Who Deserve More Attention
The only reason there aren’t Macedonian actresses in Hollywood is the language barrier. The same reason applies to global cinema, which is more of a loss to audiences than to these actresses.
It sounds like a cliché, but these Macedonian actresses would’ve made many more film roles if they were born elsewhere. Or maybe they wouldn’t be actresses at all. What truly matters is that we can enjoy their performances.
Thanks for reading till the end, and if you want to continue, here’s a list of Serbian actresses you should check out.
